I have been considering building a server out of some spare parts for a while but the thing that I end up asking myself is why? I was hoping you could drop me some ideas on what I could do with a home server. It would be based in my home, there are only a few computers attached to the network but we often need to exchange files. I also do a lot of work on my computer as I am a reviewer so backups would be useful. I run a review website so it is my job to email companies to receive samples, but some of the larger companies blacklist my emails, maybe this would help? I also have to exchange large amounts of files with my second reviewer, so would it be possible to have a portion of the server storage accessible by him so he could upload the files?
I have never worked with servers so I am mainly going to struggle with the software side. I will probably use Windows Server as I think I can get a free copy but how easy is it to use? What kind of system requirements do I need? Some suggestions and advice please!
