What Can I Do If I Have 2 Sata Devices And Only One Sata Connection?

I just got a new 8800 GTS and the problem is that it covers 3 of my sata connections on the motherboard! I have got the hard-drive plugged into the final one but I need another for my DVD Drive. Is there anyway to get a dual link sata cable or somthing, otherwise i'll have to get an IDE DVD drive!

Sometimes a right angled SATA connector can circumvent the problem but it depends on the exact setup of the system. Worth looking into though. :)

//edit you can't get a dual link cable since SATA is one device per chain.

Thats what I was thinking. The motherboard I have is the Abit Fatality Micro ATX so it doesn't quite fit the 8800gts perfectly. Do you have any links to the right angled sata cable? (EDIT) I just checked and it would still stick out a bit to much. :(

Nope, Dremmel the 8800 . . . ?

Actually it's funny you should say that because I had a look at the sata cable and it seems like just a bit of plastic is in the way of the sata connection that could be cut away. I don't really want to do it though as it would probably void the warranty. Has anyone tried anything like this before?

I'll have a go at removing some of the hard plastic casing from the sata cable then and see if that works. Worth a try I suppose. :D

I've had to do that in a shuttle before (SATA->IDE adapter caused the cable to fowl on the drive cage), it's suprising how much of the SATA connector you can trim back.

about just getting a PCI Sata card? can pick em up real cheap, i sold one on here bout month ago for a fiver

I bought a 4 port s-ata pci card on a well known online website for less than £10 deliverred, does the job fine

Thanks for all the suggestion. With the PCI Sata cards I am not sure if I have enough room as the card covers 2 PCI slots and the wirelss card is in the other and then I have a tiny one at the top so could I install it in that one.

Also with the sata cable i'll definitly try removing some of the plastic cover first as I only need a bit off the top for it to fit. How easy was it for you to remove the plastic and was there any toold what you used that you would reccomend? Thanks :D

If you use a sharp knife, just remember to cut AWAY from yourself / fingers / thumbs. Trust me, i have sliced myself so many times, and i never seem to learn.

you have the abit F-i90HD board? I have one of these with a POV 8800gts and only the 1st sata port is blocked, the other 3 are usable. Not sure how yours is blocking 3 ports

I got it sorted now!! :D I cut the cable and removed some of the excess plastic surroinding the sata cable connector so it could be bent so that it fits with the card over the top of it still.

I bet yours isn't the MATX board.

Thanks for the help anyway. :D

I just checked out the picture on overclockers and the heatsink and fan on my one is actually a lot different, it stretches right to the end of the card and actually looks a lot better than the one on the pictures, have nvidia improved their stock coolers or somthing. I'll post photo of it tommorow.
