seems pointless going to a GTX 280 seeings as its hardly any quicker and would be a waste.

i was wondering about xfired 4870's as a potential upgrade but not sure if performance would be enough to even warrant a purchase.

its going to be a long time before we get any new cards again

so opinions? stick with what i have or upgrade?

As your gaming at 1680x1050 i cant see any game you own struggling, so from a common sense point of view theres no need to upgrade. Looking at it from a pc hardware fanatics point of view, the only viable option may be a 4870x2 when they are released, with the option of quad X fire later, but no one knows figures yet so stick with what you have its no doubt doing the job very well!

Just noticed the 1680x1050 was in the sig below, damn my fumbled ninja edit!!!!

Get Rid of your nf4 mobo and opty cpu and get a nice new core2 setup

Ditto to that.

I had a 3Ghz 4200+ x2 and moving to a q6600 at 3Ghz gave me a 12 fps boost in crysis with my 8800GTS G92 card so I can only imagine how much your opty is holding back the performance of your 8800GT SLI.

It would be even worse with the GTX280.

Like said previously, stick with what you have until basically you can see a massive upgrade paths, as at them resolutions, there's NOTHING that won't play at high settings so, just forget about upgrading. If you HAVE to, then buy 2xGT280's would be nice hahahaha... and also cost £900 notes...

Cheers Pug

Not so sure. Even at that res he is crippling his performance with his Opteron.

You can upgrade to Intel very cheaply. I sold my DFI, 4200+x2 and 2Gb of ram for £150 and spent £250 on a abit IP35 pro, q6600 and 2 gig of ddr2.

Best £100 I ever spent.

Sorry, meant stick with his GPU's not his CPU, although saying that, to upgrade is a royal pain in the ass... yeah he'd see an increase, but it's the arsing about isn't it... depends how much time he has on his hands and whether he wants to spend any money on a system upgrade... either way if he upgraded the GPUs he'll end up upgrading the CPU etc anyway as like you said, he'll be seriously CPU bound if he doesn't and it'd be a serious shame to hamped the GT280

Cheers Pug ;)

Yeah a pain but his stuff is still worth good money and he doesn't have to buy a quad like me.

A nice SLI board, a e2180 or e7200 and a couple of gigs of ddr2 ram and he might not have to spend hardly anything.

Plus he was looking at spending £400 on a card

well i dont think im going to get much for my mobo, ram or even cpu because one of them is stopping the rest from overclocking. There is a problem somewhere and i dont know what it is

seems to be ok at stock though, still.. i can upgrade to a C2D or wait a bit longer for the first batch of non extreme nehalems

Absoutley no point in that what so ever

well 2 GTX 280's would probably be very fast but for the money on those cards you would want almost 100% in each game, which aint happening.

ton of money for a (yet) unneeded increase
