I got to network someones house, they want a wireless connection.

So its no problem for me at all, as i have set up a lot of home networks, but only from scratch and using the coponents i choose.

However, this persons house has a BT USB modem (they are with BT internet, openworld i think).

I have come to a bit of a dilema then, i know routers wont have a USB connection for modems! And this modem is so cheap, i dont even think it has a rj45 connection, it came free with thier package.

So, i know i need a ADSL router with inbuilt ADSL modem, but before i go ahead and buy, how will i set up the new modem? Will i have to phone BT notifying of hardware change?

Or will the router be able to "copy" the original modem settings(just like a belkin router?).

Thanks :D

notify bt? you're havin' a laugh surely? just remove any modem drivers/software and start from scratch as you would normally. all you need is the user's logon credentials. :)

Much better then! Been looking at routers with modems, whats this ADSL2+, is it backward compatible with ADSL?

Think i am behind the times :( ( i love my 11mbits router!)

New, more speed, more features, not available from BT Wholesale (yet, so useless unless you're on an LLU service). Currently offered by Be, UK Online and soon enough, Bulldog.

is it backward compatible with ADSL?

Yup.

like tolien says chuck the usb modem in the bin and get a wireless/modem/router/firewall, a netgear dg834g is as good as any, if money isn't an issue then the draytek vigor 2800VG or 2800G is future proof as far as adsl2+ goes. set the username and password and wpa key in the web interface and then sit back with a cold beer. jobs a goodun.
