Still looking
Well after my 9-3 being written off due to secondary fire damage from an adjacent car I have now found a replacement!

This is my second Saab and first 9-5 and I have to say I am pretty happy with it so far. I will be sending ECU off this week for a little Noobtune.

It has full service history up until last MOT which is due again in April '17. It seems to have been well looked after mechanically as looking through MOT history it has a recent new caliper, new exhaust etc. all tying up with any advisories or fails. It also comes with 4 Continental Sport Contact 5 tyres on still with plently of life and a brand new Bridgestone Potenza in the boot. It also came with both rubber mats and felt mats too.

It has done 138k and is in very good nick externally with only a little bubbling on the rear arches and alloys. Everything works as it should although the AC, working, is not quite as cold as I usually like.

On test drive I was able to knock a little off the price due to the back end being a little unstable on road bumps (specifically the driver side) however when I took wheels off after purchase to adjust handbrake it was very easy to see why it was a little squirelly. Thankfully it was only the OSR anti-rollbar bush that was goosed so I will replace both of them next week with new Powerflex ones.

The general upkeep and little things like good matching tyres, new exhaust etc. made it an easy enough decision to buy it. The evidence of being well looked after swayed me tbh although the price I got it at definitely helped.

The inside was dirty and having lived its life in Aberdeen-shire, first as a lease car(3 years) then it was owned by the last owner since 2010. From the colour of the inside I would guess the previous owner was a farmer given the dirt and grass everywhere. After cleaning it is now immaculate inside, no marks, scrapes or damage to trim or seats.

I have to say I definitely think I got a very good replacement and being full time at university the money I paid was a massive bonus. The bargain basement market of used cars in this country is amazing, so many great or interesting cars for the money. This bargain being had for the grand total of £870!!!

It has the 2.0t (B205) petrol engine which is only 150bhp and 240nm. Sending off ECU for Noobtune map gives it around 220bhp and 360nm, so a little closer to my now deceased 9-3.

Cheap, happy reliable motoring... oh and comfy too!

I'd be a little wary of slapping it with a 50% torque increase on 140,000 miles, but if it survives then more power to you :) (heh...)

I'd be concerned about the longevity of the clutch, and the turbo.

I dunno, some Saabs are weird. :p

I think the engine in OP's car is over-engineered and an awful lot of people have had them mapped to 220HP without any issues.

Theres a guy who posts on the UKSaabs forum called Saabnoob who does it.

IIRC the 220HP variant will get close to 300HP too.

I don't tend to like Saabs as a rule but that's cracking value for money, and the 9-5 estate does look quite purposeful.

No way they will get 70bhp extra out of it.
More like 40 at a push...

It depends on the engine. In this case perhaps the 150bhp 2.0t shares many of the same components as the higher-powered variants.

isn't it the B207?

Why not? The B207 was used with 3 different turbos (Low/Mid/High), upping the boost on the low-pressure one has the same effect (although likely at the expense of reliability).

Superchips offer a +50bhp and +89nm map, and they are generally at the "safer" end of the maps (i.e. fairly generic and will work on all cars).

EDIT: Got mixed up with the 9-3 and 9-5

The 9-5 from 98-2009 used the same Saab engine (B2x5) in all its variants, the 2.0 and 2.3 are essentially the same. the 2.0 having the Garrett turbo and the 2.3 Aeros and such having the Mitsubishi TDO4 turbo which is a straight bolt on upgrade job to the 2.0. These engines generally being good on stock internals for 300+.

My last Saab gave me no mechanical problems at all and being handy enough with a spanner I don't mind doing most jobs.

It rides a lot smoother than the sport suspension setup in the 9-3 and has adequate power to drag around but unlike the mapped 9-3 Aero I had you have to frequently change down gears on hills etc.

My brother did something similar and got an 04 plate Volvo V50 for £1200. It runs perfectly after very small amounts of maintenance, is extremely comfortable and is pretty high spec.

If you know what you're looking for you can get yourself a bargain that's for sure.

The only problem is the 2.0 is kind of pointless. Emissions and mpg are basically the same as the 2.3 aero whereas in the aero you get 250bhp standard or 270bhp and 400nm with a remap. Mine consistently pulls 28mpg and averaged 35mpg across the continent which is fantastic for a car with a 1600kg kerb weight and near enough 300bhp to play with. The B series engine were really a fantastic bit of kit with the trionic series of ecu's controlling them being well ahead at the time.

Shame what happened to the OP'S 9-3. Quite a rare colour.
