Been to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
IMO Lanzarote is the best of the bunch, been several times, but if depends what you want to do. If you just want to sit in the hotel by the pool or by the beach then pick one as they are all the same from that aspect. If you want to rent a car or get a coach and see the sights then Lanzarote has the best IMO. Volcanoes, Zoo, loads of César Manrique architecture stuff you can tour including the awesome viewpoint and his home, waterpark, lava caves, there's even a cave with a pond full of blind crabs that are unique to the cave.
As for avoiding the "travelling Rooney's" they infest all the islands, just aim for a resort in an area that doesn't look like Blackpool and you will miss them.
