What car did you learn to drive in? Shocked to see what learners are now driving...

I learnt to drive in a Citroen C3, a so called super mini....
but (and this maybe in the region where I live), I seen loads of driving schools using mini SUVs to teach people in... The other day I saw a Merc A class being used.
Is this now the norm?

Dads Nissan Sunny and my driving instructor had a, I want to say, Ford Fiesta but I can't really remember.

I think people should learn in something similar to what they'll actually drive.

I learnt in a Corsa. A common first car at the time.

These days I think everyone should be learning in an ev. Something like a leaf or zoe they have a chance of affording.

A mid 90s mk2 micra, was a hateful/gutless little thing! my mums 1.1 ax was a far nicer car to drive.

Around these parts most of the driving schools seem to be using semi premium suvs, no wonder lessons seems to have shot upto 40-50 per hour....

1988 Ford Fiesta Mk 2 Ghia.

A friend learned in his dad's e39 M5 (!) which he now owns himself 20 years later.

Pretty sure it was a Clio I learned in, back in 95/96.

Talking about mini SUVs see a few of them knocking about in Yaris Crosses these days.

Official lessons (around 2006) in a MK2 Focus. Private practice with my dad in my sister's MK1 Yaris (which is still in daily use by my dad as it happens). First car was a MK1 Focus.

In a Pegout 208 with BSM 3 years ago and passed.

When I was younger in a Ford Escort which I bought for £250 to learn in, never did, and my brother used it and killed it.

Fiat Stilo. Hah in bright yellow. Actually an ok car to drive but very soft clutch. Instructor was very old school, but he would play those "best of" CDs and liked his rock. I'd often be on a lesson with Gary Moore and such like playing. :)

Morris 1100 in 1970 ish.

No seat belts, no power steering, ABS, cassette tape or anything much. On the open road both I and the instructor could wind down the windows and spark up an Embassy Gold (his).

Mostly an origial Ford Ka, but did a fair bit of driving in my mum's VW Polo.

Back then there weren't many cool small cars, I don't think driving instructors cottoned on to having appealing cars till the new Mini came out.

A late 90s Clio. I remember it having a very notchy/sticky clutch pedal which made it really hard to drive.

Seeing learners in Lexuses and all sorts now. Not very "realistic" considering what they will be driving to start off with tbh. Its going to be something cheap but indestructible like a 00s Yaris or Jazz. So no active safety stuff and old types of auto gearboxes.
