I'll soon be ready to get a 2nd car following the death of my 406 to "systematic electrical failure" (tm).

I'm looking for VW Golf sized ideally and am looking for recommendations for that sector of the market.

£6000 is the budget.

Must be a:

Turbo diesel or LPG for economy
A nice drive
Not too high an insurance group (although I'm 33 so I don't mind around group 12/13)
either Silver, dark blue or black in colour.
Preferably no more than 4 years old.

......and NOT have Peugeot anywhere in the name of the car :p

Recommendations on models to start with please.

When i'm ready to buy I'll plumb the depths of the OcUK collective wisdom and seek help on cars that are actually available to buy at the time. :D

Thx

Volkswagen Bora TDi 130. They're cheap on the insurance, the engines are bullet proof and have a nice power delivery with loads of torque to boot. The interiors are very well put together and usually well specced and you have a wide choice for your budget.

If you move up to a Passat you will go into higher mileage and shoddier examples. Unless you need the size of the Passat then the Bora is an excellent choice for this budget.

Sport or SE trim is an absolute must. Get one with the highest spec you can afford.

The Toldeo SE TDi is another option. It's pretty much the same car and can be better specced for the same price but I found them more expensive on the insurance for some reason. You shouldn't have any bother at your age. From personal experience, the interior of the Toledo is put together better than the Bora but there's little in it, they're both excellent cars for the money.

I'd prefer a hatchback this time I think. Had a real blast in my cousin's Leon Cupra 1.8T so is the TDi any good in the leon range?

I liked the drive of the focus. Had loads as hire cars at work and they really like to be chucked about.

What about the Mk4 Golf? Any good?

Its the VAG 1.9TDi lump :)

The Leon is exactly the same as the Toledo only it has an ugly arse in place of the boot :p
You'll pay a premium for a Leon over the equivalent Toledo so if you go for the saloon version you'll get more car for your money. If you would rather have a hatch you can still get Leons for your budget.

Stay away from the Mk4 Golf. They're hideously overpriced for what they are. Stick to the Leon/Bora/Toledo which are all the same car as the Golf but at much better value for money.

Nice power delivery  Nothing then a kick up the **** when the turbo comes on, and 2 seconds later your changing gear again. Drive 130tdi passats at work sometimes and they are my least favourite car by far

That depends on your preference. I used to own a B5.5 Passat TDi and I liked the power delivery on it.

Sorry just living up to my alleged stereotype ;)

Personally, I'd be looking at a Toledo TDI.

Although I'm developing a worrying aversion to 4 cylinder diesels now :(

Having had a saloon 406 for 6 years I find saloons quite restrictive in terms of the types of load you can carry. As an example I squeezed a full size door into a Fiat Uno one time from B&Q. In the 406 it wouldn't fit without the steering wheel being 2 inches from my chest for the thankfully short drive home.

Hatchbacks are just more versatile for our needs tbh, although I do like the toledo (not the most recent one which looks like a dog!)

Is Seat build qulaity identical to that of VW these days? I know VW have revolutionised the spanish outfit but is quality the same?
