What car for about £5000?

I'm looking at getting a new (well used) car. I have about £5000 (at most) to spend on a used car. What sort of car could I get for that? My only requirements are:

Less than £5000
4/5 door
Decent(ish) MPG

Ok. I'm looking for a mainly practical car but hopefully someting thats a bit fun as well. Don't really care about insurance but don't want something that coats loads to insure.

I don't really know the differences between diesel & petrol so I don't know.

Saloon? Hatch?

Any 1.4 to 2.0 litre car is going to give decent economy.

I've been driving a 1.4 SE Honda Civic all weekend, 5 doors, decent economy AC/ leccy windows, cd blah blah.

Or you could get an ST24, Impreza Turbo yadda yadda. All can get 30mpg if you dont drive like a tool.
