I'm looking for a comfortable cruiser to munch up a 90+ mile commute a couple of days a week.

Mainly focused on comfort and needs a bit of performance, however would like to do above 40mpg if possible!

So far I've been looking at the Golf GTD, 3 Series and maybe A6/ A8.

Also looking at the Jaguar XF and Lexus offerings.

Budget: 15k

Let me know what you guys think!

Cheers

I did 90K in mine, you should be able to find something for that money and it will meet, probably surpass what you are expecting. Go drive, come back and tell me I am wrong.

Fox might bum you though, so be careful.

Not sure the Golf GTD should be on the list if comfort is a concern. You want soft/dynamic suspension, normal sized wheel/tyre ratio and lower cabin noise. Generally the more exec models are a better choice. XF and 5 series are a good shout.

and yes, potential sexual harassment from Fox on the 530D.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps.

Had a look at the 5 series, too big for me. I also drove the F30 320d m sport. Very impressive.

Also planning to drive the same generation Audi A4 to see how they compare.

Anyone have any opinions on which options I should keep and eye out for and which of the two would be more comfortable over long distances?

There is not a huge amount of exterior difference between the 3 and 5 in my experience. The 5 series being the MUCH better car for the use you are going for. And is the 5 series not realistically an XF sized car? It's certainly in the same price range for sure. And the same as the A6, smaller than the A8.
