First of its bearing in mind that I don't have that much cash at the moment (around £2,000). I'll get another £1,000 (up to £2000 I reckon) or so from the parents, and I'm getting a temp job that should give me a couple more thousand during the summer (low costs as I'll be staying at home/friends).
I'm looking to buy a car. Preferably a car with a soft roof.
I've had a look around and these seem to be the most likely candidates:
1- Mazda MX-5
2- Toyota MR2 (MK3)
3- Honda S2000
4- MG TF
5- BMW z3
Seeing as I'm 23, I think the S2000 is way out of my league in both terms of insurance and running costs, as well as the initial buy.
The Z3 looks aged, but they seem to come in fairly cheapish. Not sure about insurance and running costs though.
MG TF seem to be cheap but I've read a lot of issues about head gasket problems? Also insurance group is pretty damn high
This leaves either the MR2 or the MX5. The MR2 looks nicer (imo), but apparently there is no boot space at all. Also reliability on the older ones seems bad (liable to cats failing?). The MX5 seems nicer to be in, with more storage, but it doesn't look as exciting and apparently the MPG figures are pretty bad.
Finally as a curve ball option there is always the suzuki cappuccino, but I'm not sure I'd even fit in one...
I'm in no immediate rush to buy a car, and I was hoping to get some feedback on choices (and any others I might have missed!). I'm then going to trawl eBay and keep my eyes open for a cheap one that needs some work or that is priced cheaply. I've always had an interest in cars and would like to tinker on something now that I've got the spare time.
