Recently had bill for clutch and gearbox, got the clutch done but just going to get a new car instead of dropping another £700 on a gearbox.

Will probably look to part exchange if possible as I think the cars still worth about £1k with gearbox issues.

Ideally I'd be looking to get a car on finance, so up to about £200 a month on finance seems standard is 60 months (preferably not PCP)

I've currently got a Suzuki Swift if that's any use.

I'd be looking at a 15/16 plate, must have reverse/parking sensor, USB on the default radio/cd player!! similar-ish size to the Suzuki (and if it's similar size at front even better as I'm going to be paranoid about the space infront of me with a new car), preferably faster than the Swift.

Most of my driving is city centre about 30 minutes a day.

Any suggestions on cars I should look at?

Your car has a gearbox issue so your goin to buy a new car and spend 5yrs paying it off :eek:
It might be a cheap fix have you been quoted any repair prices?
As for your question the new 1.0T Fiesta Zetec S are pretty nippy in the 140bhp variant and look quite good.

Are you changing because of the gearbox or because you want a new car? If it's the latter then it's understandable but don't try and convince yourself it's a wise investment to spend £12k (£200 * 60) instead of spending £700 on a gearbox.

Want to, gearbox was just a reason for me to do so really.

Wanted to change for a few years to be honest but valued money too much to be bothered getting a new car :p

Couldnt you just get a used gearbox and put the car right. Just cant see another ecobox giving you a massivly greater automotive experience. How old is the suzuki?

Wasn't the outcome about the gearbox was that it was fine and the garage were trying it on? Or was that someone else?

As well as the finance cost, can you tell us your budget in terms of new car price?

Considering going down the PCP route, after this expires I'd either buy one outright or go for a higher end car on finance (as realistically I'd be looking to change in a few years anyway, only reason for this currently is limited disposable income which shouldn't be an issue in say 2 years).

Peugeot 208 seems to mark most of my boxes so far lacks parking sensors though, but similar size to the Swift. This seems to be about £119 deposit/per month on Arnold Clark currently for PCP deal.

Seems to be a bit slower than the Swift, but to be honest on an average month I may use the motorway once, other than that it's city driving and a 30 second stretch of a 40 road.

Anyone got any thoughts on the 208?

I'd need to get gap insurance too, any ideas what £5k gap insurance would cost? (cars seem to be valued at about £9k so I'd imagine I'd only need 5k vs 10k?)

Peugeot are just awful. They are cheap for a reason. If you are getting a new one with a big warranty then fine but if your running one for a few years that has no warranty i would expect stupid niggly things to start breaking on it.
IMO the Fiesta Zetec S with 140bhp not only looks the best but is the quickest and the better in that category of cars your looking at.

It would be a new car on PCP so would be 3 year warranty I believe, I'd imagine you can get between 2-4 years PCP depending on dealer

Why dont you book some test drives and see what you think of certain cars? driving a car can change your whole perception of it. Do you have a shortlist of cars that you have narrowed it down to?

People here do love to regurgitate stuff they hear, you're talking about a brand new car from a brand that's actually come a long way in recent years. I had a 508 for a while and it was faultless and had the 208 as a courtesy car a few times. Really good little car IMO, good fun to drive and nice infotainment system. Not sure I'd have one over a fiesta and the horrible small diesels and EGC gearboxes are to be avoided but "it's French so it'll break" is absolutely no help and probably complete nonsense anyway
