budget = £250 (happy to buy used)

Most importantly is that I want it to be able to passthrough HD audio tracks to my receiver from blurays. is there a card that can do this?, or will I need a dedicated sound card?

Thanks :)

You can connect it to your receiver via HDMI and then from the receiver to your monitor as long as the receiver will output at a resolution high enough for your monitor.
Or HDMI into the receiver and display port from the graphics card to the monitor.

Or optical from your motherboard to your reciver for audio but it wouldn't be lossless.

Most modern cards can carry audio via HDMI. Do you want the best performance you can get for £250 ?
Can you also tell us the specs of your current PC ?

Judging by your sarcasm, I guess you didn't understand my question.
Because you specified that "most importantly is that I want it to be able to passthrough HD audio tracks to my receiver from blurays", I was keen to get a sense of whether this is your main requirement, or that you want to get a card SPECIFICALLY for gaming, which can also transmit hd audio.

If you just want to do some casual gaming, there are loads of cards below the £200 mark which can do you just fine, and tick your main requirement too. Too bad you took my question the wrong way...

Any of the recommended cards will do what you want. Check out the 2nd hand market and you might find yourself a 290/x or a 780 for that kind of money too.
