Hi all

Im after a new card, generally go for nvidia normally. I have about 300 to spend.

Ive heard the 970 has had problems with its memory along those lines so i didnt know wether it was better to try save the money for a 980 which on the site is up for 425.99 for the ocuk version.

What does everybody think im better going for?? is AMD a better option??

For the money what does everybody think???

Cheers all

The 970 memory probs were blown out of proportion and I had no probs with one. If you game at 1080P, I would go for the 970.

That is the one I had and no problems at all. And Batman Arkham knight is a nice addition :)

If you game at 1440P or higher, I would save your pennies and see what is what in the next 2 weeks.

Hi Gregster

What about this one? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-147-GI

Opinion between the two?

Andrew

It's AMD's rumoured gpu which is said to be launched soon and will spank all Nvidia cards and cost a tenner and double as an air conditioning unit in summer.

I don't think he is telling you to get that card but if it is cheaper than the gtx980 and has better or the same performance then there is a possibility that nvidia will adjust the price of their cards to compete.

Ok mate i catch your drift, when is the 390x surpose to be out???

390 :D

980 right now no not worth it IO would honestly wait a few days see if there is any recative pricing or aggressive pricing from both companies.

It's not exactly Gibbo with a ;) but I think we've been handed a clue here. Price drops confirmed?

Anyhow, I agree with everyone else that the best option is to wait a few days for the new stuff. I'm doing the same all my PC parts have been waiting still boxed for almost a week now, bar 2 extra fans I just ordered today. I was originally looking at the 970 and here's my 2 cents, if it comes to the worst and AMD fail or the 970 just somehow ends up being better value.

The 3.5GB thing is no issue for most folks. It only becomes an issue when over 3.5GB of VRAM is used, at which point the framerate drops. Thus, for most people playing modern games at 1080p, it won't get that high. The 3.5GB is only really a concern for 1440p or higher, and only some games.

I just hope the non-reference versions of the 390x release quick too. The best versions of the 970 are the Gigabyte G1 and the MSI Gaming. G1 has a backplate and higher stock clocks for folks who don't bother overclocking. MSI has a mode where the Twin-Frozr fans don't spin below 60 degree and the fans are still the quietest of all 970s when on full load. Both overclock well.

I wonder what sorts of cooling we can expect on the 390x? It has been a while since the 290x otherwise I'd expect similar cooler designs between the 2. All of the 900 series nvidia cards seem to have versions of the MSI Gaming and Gigabyte G1 cooling so I know the MSI is likely the quietest of the 980tis too. From what I can tell, there were even MSI Gaming versions of the 290x. If they do the same for 390x, but with a backplate... I might go for it if the card itself is any good. 5-6 days feels like a very long time right now.

I think snips said 5 days'ish, so give it a week if you can wait. If anything it will be after E3 which is June 16th I believe.

Yeah meant to be released June 16th. The presentation is late evening uk time afaik, so probably available 17th for the 3xx series.

What will be the rough price of the 390x be anybody got an idea?? and even though its being revealed around the 16-17th how long will it be to you can actually buy one??

The 390X is supposedly a 290X with a little tweaking, AMD's new top tier card is alleged to be called the Radeon Fury

If you're considering a 390X you may as well just get a 290x now for a lot less

But to be honest comparing the 980 and 970 I would just get a 970
