What card(s) for 1440p gaming?

I'm not sure I could run a 295X2 or x2 290X anyway with an 850W PSU. Already running an OC'd 5820K on X99 @ 4.4GHZ and 16GB RAM. Seems like I'd be pushing it. The PSU requirement of the 900 series are perfect. Annoying.

Hi
I am running a 5820 @4.375 AS I am on 125

Did a test with a plugged in power thing .. expected it to be using more but under 100% CPU I was pulling 330w.

I expected a bit more .. but mm was happy to see I have lots free for GPU

I would wait a while, 980s with 8gb shouldn't be far away. Buying a card with "only" 4gb today is IMO a mistake for 1440p+(the mistake I made a couple of months ago),

Same thing goes for the 290X, I wouldn't invest today on an old and power deficient card.

@ No 1 Dave: When you see high frame rates and stuttering it's pretty upsetting.

A 290 or 2 will offer the best value for money at 1440p.

I use a single 3GB 780 for 1440p. Haven't hit the limit yet but I also haven't bought any of the shoddy games that came out last year.

Pair of 290's and a minimum psu of 850w if your going xfire at 1440p, maybe 1000w if you want to oc the cpu and cards. And very good case cooling, pcie slot spacing on your motherboard for xfire/sli helps too.

LOL @ the vram talk affecting your decision :D
You realise it's massively exaggerated right?
Funny thing is bunch of people (typpically Nvidia users) keep on saying more vram is not needed, yet everytime a game that have very high vram usage comes out, they all yelling "poor console port", "lazy developers", "poorly/lazily optimised" etc...and does whining about something beyond our control that's we all know can and will happen help with dealing with the situation? It doesn't.

So it's always good to have extra vram in reserve just in case for those that don't mind spending a bit extra for peace of mind.

Cool, I could wait however I think I'll go the 970 SLI route, especially if any B grade bargains come up and I can always flog them and move onto something else later in the year or next year depending on what comes out.

I'd go with a single 980 over SLi 970s.
