hi guys,

im currently builidng my new computer. so far its as follows

Corsair Obsidian 750D Full Tower Case - Black
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
Gigabyte Z87X-OC Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

i havent decided on which ram etc to use yet.

but my next main choice is the graphics card. i have been toying with going with a 270x but thats now moved up to a 280x, but should i consider the nvidia options which rival the 280x? i cant afford to spend a fortune on a card, ( i would love to)

my budget would be at a push 350 max but ideally 300 max

could you guys suggest any options i should consider

my current system is pretty old with an i3 3.20 1156 and an nvidia gts450 so anything is a huge jump compared to my current setup.

thanks rob

Given your motherboard, this would be the ideal - although you would have to buy it tonight for it to be (almost) within acceptable budget range, and you would have to wait a couple of weeks to get your hands on it as it's currently out of stock. But still, the colour scheme...

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X "BF4 Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-00-50G) £365.99
Total : £375.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

There is the 280X, obviously:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 280X TRI-X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card £275.99
1 x MSI Radeon R9 280X Gaming Edition OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
Total : £525.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You're so close to a 290 though...

As for Nvidia options - the 780 is currently too expensive for you, and the 280X is preferable to the 770.

Tri-X is just the name of Sapphire's custom cooler. It's quieter and more effective than AMD's reference cooler. And looks better.

Several people have been asking for card advice around the £350 mark lately.

As already said the sapphire 290 tri @ £365 is a good deal (but as said you need to order tonight)

In the NVidia flavour I recommend a MSI 780 Gamer think its £360 odd?

Or if you really cant stretch to that a 280X is a good fall back.

Sorry Im at work so cant link baskets at the minute to make things clearer.

I havent decided on psu yet I was looking at
Seasonic G series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

Is the 290 card that much of a jump up from the 280?
If it is I can just about make the price of the tri x card. :)

Just looking at pricing up the other bits I need I think I may need to fall back to the 280x equivalent. As it's pretty much a 100 pounds cheaper which could be used elsewhere. Unless i wait à month till I get paid and then cn jump to the 290. Even though it will be more money then.

If you don't mind waiting you might as well. I'm sure there will be more deals for 290s or 780s around that price.

What are the other components you're looking at? Maybe there will be somewhere you can save a bit.

What kinda resolution you plan to game at? :) I think as mentioned at the lower end 270x/280x the nvidia option isn't viable (GTX770) mainly due to VRAM. but if you are on 1080p and do not plan to move away anytime soon then it is at least worth considering.

anything higher in resolution you're limited to AMD below £350 (New at least).

i honestly thought i would need a more powerful psu, if i can drop down a bit thats great in terms of cost but would like a modular psu if possible to do a nice clean looking build

Really been impressed by this card, Msi R9 290 Gaming, very quiet, runs cool very powerful and looks good too. Currently £359.99 but has been £329.99 recently on today only. Oh and I wouldn't skimp on the Psu either, a commom mistake often regretted, 600 watt minimum recommended for the above card. :)

To be honest looking at what you have listed there, you could change some things and that would give you another £100 to get the 290, which would give the biggest performance increase for games.

1) Get an air cooler for £35-50 and it will work as well as the H100.
2) You could get a cheaper motherboard or get a 4670k which would work out about £100 cheaper

Or you could just get a 280x which will still work perfectly with every game at 1080p pretty much.
