what card

What sort of price range are you looking at here and what format(AGP or PCI-E)? Some people seem to think that ATI graphics cards offer a nice image or at least they used to but at the budget end of the market I'd say it is all about the same.

PCI-E, it needs to be as cheap as possible really. is there any real need for a gfx card just for watching dvd's? what is onboard gfx like?

Onboard graphics are obviously never as good as a standalone solution and they do use system Ram but for basic DVD watching it should be fine, something like one of the Asus MicroATX motherboards have a Geforce 6150 chip in them which would probably suit.

If your going to be overclocking too then you should go for a seperate card as most of the integrated graphics are M-ATX and have restricted overclocking options.
