Im in the Process of choosing the parts for my new system. I Wondered if an 8800GTS would be overkill in my situaltion.

I use a 17inch screen running at 1280x1024 and Windows XP I do not intend on changing either of these for afew years.

What are my best options, Would a 1950 Pro be a better option considering I wil not be running super high resolution. Or even maybe a 8600 may be the right solution for me. Other Option I guess would be the 7900, and 7950.

Im also after a quiet card, and I notice the 1950Pro can be brought with a Zalman fan.

System will be a e4300 on a Asus P5ne.

I'm building on a fairly tight budget and if I can save money that would be good.

I'd suggest waiting until at least monday so the results of the 2900xt are released once the nda is lifted. There might be some price drops as well. I've got an 8800gts 640 and it plays everything fine, (might be overkill for 1280 x 1024 res though), but the 320mb versh would play virtually anything you throw at it and its gonna be reasonably future proof as well.
I'd still suggest wait till monday and see what occurs.

dont go for a 8600 as apparently its no different than a 7600..go for a 1950 or a 7900 both of which should be around £100-130

Steer clear of the 8600 series, they are handicapped by the 128Bit interface.

8800 GTS is good for that res, but as said above wait till Monday in case of price cuts from the R600 effect.

Yeah definately wait a couple of days, as as said above they may drop in price a bit more the 8800 GTS's once the R600's are released, and they are amazing at 1280x1024, im using that res here and it just hammers through everything with ease. :)
