Yet more expense, just had my nephew Asus 8800GTs 640mb finally die., his birthday soon want new card.:(

Budget £150 max, games at 1680x1050, pc using E8200 & W7, no preference whether AMD or Nvidia, what should I buy?

ATI 5850 or GTX 460 1gb depending on which camp you like and save yourself a few quid as they are just around £100 - £115

Although the 5870's are still £149.99 on OCUK which would be a good buy or you can pickup a GTX 560 for about £150 on OCUK.

The 5850 is a better buy in the price/performance stakes:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive**

£114.95 until Wednesday morning and you qualify for free postage.

Does your nephew's power supply have two 6 pin power connectors for such a card?

The 8800GTS uses 1, I think, so you need to see if it has another.

Then I think it has to be the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850.
Still time to persuade me otherwise, as I'm not ordering until tomorrow.

Yes, BeQuiet 550w has two pci-e connectors.

But, I have 800w Gigabyte Odin & a 600w OCZ in the spares box.

Just ordered the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 & a CM Elite 330 case for his birthday.

Thanks Surveyor & others for all the advice.

Great choice. Got the Sapphire 5850 Xtreme and is a great card. Idles at just 30 degC and hits only 55-60 degC after a couple of hours of Battlefield 2. The cooler is silent at idle and very quiet when gaming. Superb card for the money!

You're late to the party.

I don't see why though.

It's 30% more expensive than the HD 5850 and offers no performance increase in most games.
I have to agree. While the GTX560Ti is great, the non-TI version GTX560 is basically just a GTX460 1GB with higher clock, since they got the same steam processor count, and both are same GF104 architecture.
