What causes heat in PSUs

dont quote me on this but i think its the components, resisters or whatever they are know as that produce the heat with the current passing through them or somit. Much like the mosfets on a mobo

Most good psu's with a fan are near silent at low power consumption, i have a tagan and i cant hear it at all whilst at the computer, if i put my ear near to the back of it i can generally just about hear it if the PSU is really being stressed.

If you really want a genuinely silent PSU, buy a fanless one, they are more expensive and generally have lower wattage ratings but they will do exactly what you want.

I kind of get the feeling your going to try to cut the fan off in a PSU thats intended to be fan cooled not passively cooled, i really would say dont remove/kill a fan in a normal PSU thats been designed to use a fan to cool itself, this really isnt a good idea and you'll most likely end up with a dead PSU/psu that restarts after an hour of being on as they simply aren't designed to work passively and will not cope without minimal airflow.

Resistance, as with all other components, and pretty much every other inefficiency in the world/universe.

Give it a few years and we'll probably all be running superconducting PCs that are 100% efficient and many times faster than todays, and all of course passively cooled (would only really happen if/when a material that superconducts at room temperature is found).

Boron doped diamond?

:D

Boron doped diamond is not a superconductor at room temperature. Although it is fantastic at conducting heat, which makes it ideal for electrical circuits. Shame it isn't cheap though :p

The person who finds a room temperature superconductor will be a very rich man.
