"To date, Microsoft has not commented on the source of the general hardware failure, but many believe it is related to the console overheating or the motherboard PCB warping and flexing due to poor mounting, causing the board to bend away from the CPU and GPU and lose contact with those components."

Does this mean that a console could fail at any point in time, even if it has worked perfectly up until that point?

Yes. Loads of us have previously had solid consoles go belly up. There are atleast 2 per week on this forum sadly. If it had no hardware issues it would have been the best console I've either seen or owned.

They do seem a bit hit and miss. My original one went to the 360 skip in the sky 2 days after release. To Microsofts credit, I had a new one back in my hands 2 days after sending it to them and its been a superb machine ever since.

Sadly now out of warranty, so will no doubt die any day soon ;)

yeah i read on here somwhere a few days ago that it's 58% failure rate

pretty scary

That's from a site with 2000 people on, albeit it still is bad as that many shouldn't be doing so - 4% throughout the world does seem a little low considering the problems.
