basically, im looking to buy my mate a decent sounding (well better then his marshall mg :D) distorsion/overdrive pedal, basically, my budget limits me to 1 of the following

boss ds-1/ used ds-2
marshall the gun'nor 2/jackhammer
EH double muff/nano muff

and various others, I need help :( budget is around 30 quid, he plays with somewhere between metal and rock overdrive, want something that wont sound as harsh as his mg overdrive

any help appreciated :)

As always I will say DS-1, and as always I will get flamed :p

The DS-1 can sound a bit harsh but with a careful bit of tweaking I find you can get a nice grind out of it. Everyone raves about the modified ones, but for your money, I wouldn't stick your nose up at a bog standard DS-1.

I could quite happily modify my own pedal, but I dont wanna modify an 18th birthday present and break it, especially as its like a week today

I have the Marshall Guv'nor, and it's pretty good. My first ever pedal to improve the crap sound quality of my squier starter pack amp which really was bad!

Makes any amp sound like a marshall which is great imo, though if your friend already has a marshall amp it might be overkill a little. It has less extreme gain than the jackhammer but this just makes it more versatile as you can use it as a boost as well as a gain pedal.

The DS-1 does sound a little harsh to me, and the muffs are fuzz pedals really compared to overdrive/distortion. Your best bet is to try them (ofc always the best way) but that's not the question here. I say Guv'nor. Just dont lose the nut holding the footswitch down and protecting it from damage as i did. This meant the switch stopped working and i had to make another one to fit. Not a big problem but otherwise very durable pedal for your friends style of music.

the H&K one is pretty good! dunno about the 30 quid budget tho haha... basically you can't get a decent pedal for that price I'm afraid...

i'm not looking for anything show stopping mate, i have a half dead behringer pedal that sounds better than his amp currently.

the warp factor? - that thing used to be about 18 quid with a power supply from thomman, might dig around.

thanks for the advice, will be ordering tonight so any bargains will be appreciated.

lol yeah I meant the warp factor... it looks like a black pancake lol - if it can be had for 18 quid that's a bagain - I've heard people rave about them and they certainly can't be worse than the others you were thinking about!

If you have a decent amp, use it.

Relying on tacky pedals for the distortion is going to kill you in the long run.

the EH muff pedals are ace!

i'd say go for a behringer pedal! i went to see Tracii guns (of LA guns fame) and all his pedals were behringer and the cheap £30 ones and he sounded superb
