What coating to put on wooden garden bench

My mother has a garden bench which was varnished by my father many years back, now as it was getting tatty my niece sanded it down for her but we don’t know what to use, she is not looking for paint or dyes, so any advice please ?

I did a bit of research when wondering what to do with my garden furniture and learned that oil needs redoing each year, but staining lasts for years. So I bought this:

Ronseal Trade 10 Year Woodstain Satin Dark Oak 750ml - Screwfix

Not yet put it on, but it gets good reviews.

Just use varnish again. It's designed to be a solid protective layer. Oils work but they do need to be applied regularly.

Does wood stain protect wood? Thought it just stained it?
