ive noticed the new g cards come with a different connector to old monitors and require a converter thing

is it best to use old cable or new connection?

DVI is the new connector. Coming out of your graphics card it will probably carry both digital and old analog signals. You can use this as-is with a monitor that accepts digital input, or adapt it for use with a monitor that only takes analog.
