I'm looking for a CPU and motherboard, as I'm going to use my memory, psu, graphics card etc for it...

I've got:

Geil PC6400 DDR2 800 memory 2Gb kit (ultra low latency kit)
OC Z 520W Mod stream
HIS X1900XT graphics card

Oh and what would be good enough memory for an am2 system that would be used as a server? 2gb is more than enough :) I have a Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard. It'll be just used for basic online and surfing the net type stuff.

Thanks guys for the help :)

For your conroe system:

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

Any 1gb or 2gb kit value ram will be fine your am2 system.

Would the Abit AW9D/max be a good board to try?

Read a review at X-labs and they suggested a Asus P5W DH Deluxe board with a E6300??

Would it be silly to get a E6300 or E6400? What would be best to cool it with if I'm using Air cooling? Are the Zalman 9700's any good?

For the value ram, what DDR2 speed would be ok to get? PC5400 should work fine shouldnt it?

the abit boards are picky with RAM with conroe rigs

Your best best is going for a gigabyte DS3

if overclocking get the e6300 with the scynthe ninja rev b cpu cooler, the zalmans are ok but the ninjas are great :)

if not overclocking get the e6400 you only gave a few hundred mhz from the e6300 , which in all honesty you prob wouldnt notice..

PC5400 should be fine if not overclocking

If overclocking the 6400 is recommended, hmmm so i think, just double check with others tho...

Would the Asus board be good to try or is it worth just grabbing the Gigabyte model instead?

I take it the extra L2 cache that is on the E6600 isnt worth the extra money?

I think the PC5400 should be fine as I doubt I'd overclock it if its just online as a server or playing the odd game. That reminds me, I'll have to buy another graphics card for it too!!

Thanks for the help guys :)

go gigabyte they the board for conroe chips...

extra L2 cache I doubt you will use it atm however if you can afford it would be nice....

I make sure if its worth the extra to get the better item :) Money isnt such a factor if your wanting something for me, I'll just get it when I can afford to :)

Many thanks for the advice :) Gigabyte and E6600 CPU it is then :)

Yeah im ordering a DS4 and an E6600 tomorrow, along with 2gb of the Geil Ultra Low Latency 6400 Ram, going for the DS4 as its only £5 more than the DS3. :D

Could you please let me know how you get on with overclocking/results etc? What other hardware do you have in your system?

I'm interested to see what differences there will be between the two systems :D

Another vote for this exact same setup.

What HS do you think I should get if I want to OC the E6600?

On a budget the arctic freezer 7 pro is a solid choice.

If money is no object the scythe ninja/infinity or the tuniq tower is what i would go for.

Well got it finished off yesterday, and its still at stock, but jesus this thing is fast compared to my old A64 3500+.

Old and new scores with the x1800 XT 512mb.

03 old was about 15.2k new it was 19,339

05 old was about 8.2k - 8.3k, new it was just under 10k

06 old was just over 3k odd, and new it was 4,780.

Can't remember exactly what the old scores were, but it was around those i know, im gobsmacked at that 03 one, the CPU test where the lass fights the Ogres was normally 4fps on my old 3500+, it was hitting 50 odd on my E6600, framerates in all tests were well up, incredible.

My CPU score was about 2134 on my E6600, which is cracking as my mates got a 3800+ dual core A64 overclocked to 2.8ghz, and his CPU score is still lower than that. :D

I may clock it at some point, dunno really as its incredible at stock.

My x1800 XT is definately running to its full potential now, and its showing.

I got the Arctic cooler Freezer 7 pro to, absolutely awesome cooler, and very quiet even at full speed, just like the Freezer 6 pro i had on my 3500+, according to the BIOS my CPU is only doing about 29-31.
