Looking at Santa's present after visiting a friend's and playing on his Wii - would the Wii be a waste, given the WiiU?

Depends on your budget - WiiU will play all Wii games, there are a lot of Wii titles that would suit a 6 year old.

I would get a Wii for £60 or whatever it is nowadays. You've also got loads of classic games you can download which are good for youngsters as well.

or a 2nd hand 50cc moto-x bike, start him up in amatuer racing? fun weekends in the mud :)

or twin mountain bikes, big for you little for him and ride your local cycle path/bridle ways

Another vote for the Wii.

Being an early adopter of a new system is pretty meaningless to your 6 year old, those of us who own a Wii U are either wanting to support Nintendo or are more dedicated gamers.

Wii U is a good buy if budget is no problem, especially when you consider it plays Wii games. Only downside with it being a new system is the available Wii U games aren't that plentiful, so the £200 odd price difference doesn't make that much sense unless you really want some of the current or future Wii U games.

But the majority of games that appeal will likely be Wii, the hardware and software are available at pretty fantastic prices new and used, it's also a very robust system with years of proven reliability. Really hard to recommend anything other than a Wii.

i agree with the above if it were a PS3 or Xbox etc, but a Wii or DS is fine imo.

Wii - great fun for all the family.

DS - great for car journeys and relieving boredom when in the company of adults (restaurants etc).

none.

I never got my first console until I was at least 10.

Everyone to there own I just feel 6 is young to start playing consoles.

My daughter has watched me play games from birth and was playing games with me at 3 then got a leappad for her 4th birthday, she also does dancing and we go out with her bike, its all about balance.

I would say a Wii would be perfect, and the balance board + games will keep him active too.

personally i see it to be better then sitting and watching a film, its more engaging and you have to think more about what your doing not just stare at the TV. also gives you a bit of family play on multiplayer games and co-op games

At 6 years old any console you want/support/prefer/see a bargain for. Honestly at 6 years old kids these days can play any console. They all have good games for kids. Don't think too much about it. The Wii on paper is great for kids, but all a kid might need is just one game they love on PS3/XBOX and they are satisfied. i.e. FIFA on PS3 = majority of gaming time for my lad because he lives and breathes football.

I disagree.

I would go with a 360 personally. create an avatar, parental lock. netflix for kids and a crap load of suitable games, arcade or mainstream. Kinect is good fun too :) (although i personally hate it with regards to serious games(I can forgive voice control))

DS, Wii and XBOX 360 (Along with kinect). :) Anything that looks to be suitable for your viewing and for a child is fine. Look around different Gaming websites for children's games and arcade games.
