What cooler for 2x4870's in Xfire

I have 2 of these on the way and have been reading about how hot these cards run due to the fan profiles and how noisy they are under load. I'd like to use an aftermarket cooler but still be able to fit both cards. So that rules out the likes of the Thermalright HR03GT with a fan fitted. Was thinking of getting a pair of Akasa Blu Vortex Neo's. Anyone tried these ? Do the fans work off a mobo header and spin at a constant speed or can you hook them into the 4870's fan connector on the pcb ? Are the fans quiet ?

thanks

Get the Vortexx Neos. :)

Fan is very quiet. You can hook it up to the motherboard or use the 3 pin to molex adapter and just power it off a molex connector.

Not sure how the Vortexx Neo's would cope with the heat pumped out of a 4870. They've only 2 heat pipes and the surface area of the Aluminium fins isn't massive. They are however very quiet. Great for 8800GT's but as I said the heat from the 4870's might be a bit much.

I believe that the cowling below the fan has vents cut in it to blow air onto the V-Reg area, but I imagine it relies on that area being under the fan.

V-reg are on my 4850s isnt even warm when you touch it.

Very nice indeed! is it just a dual slot cooler? you can still use the slot next to it?

(Bah stupid forum error multipost!)

Very nice Azza...very nice indeed.

But as Mighty pointed out, would they handle a 4870's heat ?

Also, why is it not possible to plug them into the pcb on the card..I assume they are 3pin and the card is 4pin and uses pwm.

thanks

They are dual slot coolers.

And yes they would handle the heat of a 4870. Its not possible to plug them into the card fan header because they just have a normal fan 3 pin connector.

If you plugged them into the card though, wouldn't it just run the fans at full speed saving a mobo 3pin connector ?

I think I'll order up 2.

Easy to fit I assume, and is AS5 the best thing for the core ? What about the memory, does it come with thermal pads or something for it ?

Well easy to fit, could do it blind folded.

Yeah I use AS5 and it does come with 8 thermal pads.

It wont fit into the cards fan header.

Thanks for the info. mate. Will definitely get a pair. Isn't it an 80mm fan running at 2500rpm..thought it would be a tad loud...maybe not gaming compared to the stock, but in windows idling wont it be running full whack ? I wonder if plugging it into a fan controller is the ticket ?

It is very quiet.

I canny hear it over the Sharkoon silent eagle 2000 or the stock fan on a 4850 at 40% I have.

Although that silent eagle 2000 is loud as hell :)
Still it sounds to me like a good cooler and I'll definitely be getting 2.

Will two of these be suitable for 2 x Powercolour 4870 in X-Fire? Running on an Asus Rampage Forumula.

Thanks
