What could be causing this? juddering / spluttering?

I would say it's probably the beginning of a coil pack failure. If not this then a fuel pump/fuel pressure sensor. Injectors would be wayyy down on my list of things to check.

Have you had it in to a proper garage to scan the codes? Surely these instances will have generated a code.

The garage that it went to checked the coil pack for misfires and said they were fine but I'm not sure they scanned for any codes, it was only a quick check in-between bookings so I guess I'll have to get it back in or take it somewhere else.

I'm going to borrow a code reader tomorrow from someone at work and the fuel filter will be replaced on Friday. It hasn't been replaced for a few years so it needs doing anyway really. Fingers crossed :)

They did mention if it was the start of a coil pack failure it may not be misfiring enough to trigger anything on the engine management so scanning for codes may not be much use.

Borrowed an obdII scanner today, no codes stored. Tomorrow the fuel filter will be changed and that will at least be something to cross off the list if it doesn't resolve.

I'd say you need a proper scanner that can read the propriety codes (Vagcom? Carly for VW?)

Carista, OBDeleven or VCDS. Wouldn't bother with much else (outside of getting access to VAS) for scanning VAG group cars.

Fair enough. I won't pay much attention to that scanner then.

New fuel filter fitted and the car has improved a bit but still isn't perfect. The garage are saying it could be my aircon causing it but I run the aircon everyday and haven't had this issue before. Admittedly its the hottest weather my car has known but still.

Does the car exhibit the problems when you have the Aircon off?

deffo sounds fuel related, does it do it when the tank is full?
I'll need to fill up by Wednesday so I'll let you know :)

I'm not 100% sure. It certainly isn't as bad, for sure but it can be quite random when it does it now so I'm not usually consciously looking out for it.

when the tank is full you will prob find if it is fuel related ie crap in the fuel filter or pipe/air it may be less affected.
