Would like a second opinion on a pc I'm looking at for a friend of an ex work colleague.
It's an old AMD 3200+ on an ASUS A8V-VM-SE with 2x512mb PC 3200.
I've been told that recently it has been freezing. I can't get it to boot up past the XP welcome screen and it never gets that far anymore.
The text on the screen gets corrupted when trying to start in safe mode and if I try and reinstall Windows then everything goes fine until the first restart and it hangs at the first splash screen.
I know it's not the hard drive or the ram as I have swapped these out and used only single RAM sticks in each socket to test that.
My thoughts are that somewhere the board/CPU/GPU is faulty and locking the machine up when certain data is called. I've reset the CMOS. Maybe it could be the CPU but not sure about that.
The text only corrupts as safe mode tries to load drivers, if you leave it at Windows setup all day it doesn't hang.
I no longer have a board or CPU to test with so will probably be recommending they bin this machine and stick to their laptops after recovering the pics from it.
However, they still might want it salvaging so before I buy a new CPU/Mobo/RAM/PSU combo whether 2nd hand or new, an thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
