Ive been given a pc to look at by a friend, he said he was converting avi's to dvds and half way through the pc went off and now when you turn it on the monitor light is just flashing on and off and the screen is black and the CPU fan is running at full speed. ive tried putting my graphics card in and i tried a new HDD but still nothing. it just sits there with a black screen and the fan running fast

Try resetting CMOS, and if possible a different CPU.

I had this problem on my friends old PC, the CPU ended up being the cause, but for it to just 'die' while working fine sounds very unusual =/

My only experience of a Cpu dying was - it died.

The thing was not o'clocked , running hot or being overworked.

Only warning that I remember was that it may have re-booted itself (for no apparent reason) once or twice before it died.

Only one way to really tell what the problem is and that is try your cpu in a machine that does work.

Comment of shop I bought it from was ' never had that before' and mention of selling loads. It was an AMD and it did have to go back back to them but they authorised swap immediately

If you can simply swap the m-board for same one that works or cpu you should not have to wipe the computer - it's not like a new machine or even an upgrade (personally never had to re-install after cpu upgrade or if swapping m-board for same one that isn't broken)

Time to start to switch componants to test each componant individually until you hit the right combination.
