What could this noise be?

Valves?. Cam chain tensioner? - There is a bearing in the cam chain tensioner. Does it do it only when cold and initially warming up or does it still do it when it attains normal operating temp?. Does it do it at idle or right through the rev range as you drive and change up to higher gears?.

When did it last get an oil change?.

It does it hot and cold. I'm not sure about the oil change as I've just bought it, do you think that alone could cure it?

Is the noise inline with the revs?

Sounds like a loose heatshild to me.

Have you tried using a big screwdriver as a stethoscope to isolate where the noise is coming from?

No it's not, you can drop it in to neutral and it sounds just the same until it cools down a bit then it goes away.

It's difficult to say from listening to it what area it is in, but check the auxiliary drive belt tensioner as they can rattle when they go.
