what cpu and it's clock speed would be enough for a 79507970 to avoid bottleneck?

I think if you can put 350.quid or thereabouts into a gpu you should be able to afford a 2500k at 4.5ghz or so which would push the cards nicely.

kk so an i5 2500k would be fine..i suppose, when i eventually buy a 7950 i'd like to think i'd overclock the hell outta it.

The i5 2500K is the CPU to have, it overclocks extremely easily (with a P67/Z68 board) they do 4GHz+ with the stock cooler simply by just altering the CPU ratio from 33X to 40X for example and most seem to do 4.5GHz+ with a £25 Cooler - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-035-CM&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

I did some real world game testing with xfire 7970 where the Guru3d article said bottleneck would show up more, i found this to be untrue from my findings they will happy sit at 60fps at 2560x1440 on a old i7 920 @ 3.8ghz

I made a big mistake as well had vsync on all games without it was hitting up to 72 fps with the i7 @3.8ghz 2560x1440

thats a sigh of relief i suppose although atm (building pc as the money comes in) I have no gpu runnig intel 3000 hd ha! i think i've reached my oc limit at 4.4 ghz..not quite 4.5...

a problem?

i know the 7950/70 are beasts and oc very well..i just don't wanna spend that much and not get the most outta them.

*edit Ofc if i am to purchase one of those cards..won't be now...will be when kepler releases..

Different chips overclock differently. 4.4Ghz is still very fast :) As long as temps are okay, stick with that.

Depending on the game you play really.

For mmos that I play which only uses 2/3 cores I need to overclock my 2500K to 4.5GHz to hold 50-60fps and not hold back my 5850.

You would think you would be more gpu limited with the 5850 than cpu limited aslong as your res was 1920x1080 and above

For me my crossfire 6950 setup did see a benefit from running my 2500k at 4.5ghz instead of stock the same goes for my current 480 sli setup however i notice no difference from 4.5 to 4.8 which is as good as mine will do. This is at 5760x1080 aswell.

Wheni get time i might see if their are any differences from runnig at 4ghz to 4.5ghz im guessing their isnt much in that, a lot of the 2500k overclocking is just for epenis benefits not actual performance for gaming people read that "everyone" gets 5ghz out of these with ease and asumes thatswhat they need imo.
