What CPU?

That depends on what you'll be using the system for?

The 8700K won't work on the X299 platform, it's the successor to the 7700K on the lower end Z270 platform, but no confirmation if it will work with existing LGA 1151 boards.

coffee lake needs x370. been stated many times already.

Primarily just general usage/media consumption/plex serving with a good deal of 4k/VR gaming thrown in.
 
As above, for those uses Ryzen will be worth more your money, the 8700K is $359, while AMD's best 6c/12t (1600X) is currently £209.99 on OcUK and is not that far behind. You could use that money saved for a better GPU which will matter a lot more for 4K/VR gaming.
 
Not really on the AMD train, been let down by them too often in the past. quite happy to stick with Intel this time round
