As above i am thinking of building my 1st watercooled pc, which will probably be my last build due to age etc, i was just going to mod the pc i already use but thought a change is as good as a rest.
The gpu i am looking to use is a 3080, i know i will have a long wait :) but i am not sure what cpu would best match the gpu in terms of avoiding bottlenecks in performance. I currently have a ryzen5 3600. The pc would be mainly used for gaming, abit of video editing and browsing the web. The watercooled kit i am currently looking at is corsairs, if that makes a difference.

cheers

If you think it will be your last build then get the 5800x over the 5600x so it will be a bit more future proof. Also no point water cooling a 5600x over a good air cooler as it uses so little power.

thanks for the input, i have an msi b450 tomahawk max mobo so that may need upgrading too as for the case i have a be quiet silent base 601, whatever i build its going to be water cooled will probably be soft pipe loop

Depends what you're playing. At 4k (I'm guessing that's why you want a 3080) you'll likely see no improvement whatsoever by waxing 400 quid on a 5800x. Unless you're going for super high fps (like 144hz and up).

Also... Fps between 5600x and 5800x are pretty much indistinguishable from the benchmarks I've seen. Maybe in a few years or so those extra cores will come in handy but by then you'd have the option of a Ddr5 system with even higher ipc.

yeah my monitor is 165mhz

Ahhh yeah in that case you might see a bit higher fps (particularly minimum) of benefit from a 5000 series amd.

If you don't wanna wait and wanna future proof - 5800x. If you are gonna upgrade in the next year anyway wait for zen 4 / ddr5
