I've been gifted some parts for an update to my old case of bits (Biostar T Power I45/ Intel Q6600/ 4xtwo gb ram).
Now I have this:
Asrock Z730Extreme 4 mobo
Intel i3-8350k
WD Black PCI-e NVME 256GB SSD
Loads of SATA HDDs
Myriad of legacy devices.
Corsair HX 620 PSU.

I don't game, nor overclock or desire LEDs .
So, Ram to outlast me (Old Fogey alert!),
Basic photo editing.
Basic video editing
5.1 sound.
Surfing/ emailing/ movies.

Suggestions, please.

@morning LuckyBenski. You were up late! Thanks for the suggestion. I was in a muddle as I was seeing DDR$ labels and then going to the website for those sticks and finding no mention of Coffee Lake. Then the confusion really set-in! A little knowledge became too much.
I was happy with my Biostar/ Q6600 combo until Win7 pro was free-upgraded to Win 10 Pro. Then the chaos started- sometimes perfect, sometimes not. Even tried a professional PC fixer to little benefit and £££££££ gone!
Once again- thank you..

LuckyBenski- me again. You got no 'likes'? How do I give you one?
You know I'm not sure! It's possible they're not enabled on this forum as some features are not used.

I'm 9 hours ahead on holiday :) It's wreaking havoc with my social media use!

Hope you find what you need - most RAM should work so long as it's not for servers. XXXXXU (where the X's are numbers) or "unregistered" usually tells you it's ok to use.

You want 8Gb (2x 4Gb sticks) or 16Gb (2x 8Gb sticks) of DDR4, ideally of 3000mhz or higher as it can make quite a big difference in certain games. OCUK has some 3000Mhz kits on offer at the moment.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Those are good kits from a respected manufacturer and that is the cheapest I have seen kits of this speed for quite some time. I know you said you don't overclock or game but those 3000mhz kits are cheaper than 2400mhz kits so it's a easy pick. Just choose whether you want 8Gb or 16Gb.

depends how much you want to spend?

the 2400mhz ballistix sports i have are good and cost under £70, the hyper fury x are good also and overclocks automatically to whatever the board supports, the team group above will be good also or you could just get the basic no fuss crucial stuff thats usually the cheapest.

pastymuncher & ExoMale. Thanks for you thoughts. I think I'm heading towards the T-Force 16
3000 MHz kit. A bit of headroom on specs suits me as stuff never decreases the demands on the system. If only.....!

well the only reason i mentioned the 2400mhz models because i have 2400 of single channel ballistix sports running just fine with my ryzen, i dont think you always need 3000 plus for the coffee lake systems, obviously they respond well, but i dont know if its as well as ryzen does or even need to respond as well as, but also those hyper x are meant to auto clock to whatever the board supports, at the time i wrote my first reply i didnt realise the deal of those team group 3000 and going from that post above for £100 the 16gb is a no brainer and trust me, ive been playing BF5 and some other games and my single 8gb has nearly been maxed out ha.

Hello blazed & ExoMale. Thanks for your responses. Much appreciated. I'm going for those T-force 3000/ 16Gb sticks. Although I read that OCing with my i3-8350K is limited, I think that 'tis myself that will be the primary limiting factor! Plus for £ton - I can go with that :D. Should be able to afford a cooler this year :).
To all of you, I'm thankful that there are people like you around, willing to share and help ordinary mortals. Cheers one -and -all.

pastymuncher.
had seen that before. My old 2.4 GHz Q6600 didn't appear to limit. Temps always way low. If the only case fan got above a whisper I knew the weather was foretelling a BBQ!
My thinking is- 850K has plenty in reserve, T-Force 3000/ 16 Gb likewise, temps should remain cool and the noise unobtrusive.
For the simple peaceful life, I have even bought (with money... sob) Win10 Pro which (so I'm promised) will be a stick-it-in, press the button and leave it alone for a few days to update! I bet it'll be more than that  .
