What desktop speakers are you using?

Retiring my Logitech Z5500s after some 16 years of service for space. Truly incredible value for money.

Picked up some Bose companion 2 series III and boy do I miss that sub but these will suffice.

Well one thing lead to another this eve and I should have some new LS50 Meta in carbon black arriving Sunday :D

The Q300s have served me extremely well to the point I imagined they would remain end game for me but the more reviews I watched and read of the new LS50 Meta the more I felt it had to be mine.

The NAD D 3045 will be powering them. Given how transparent the Q300s are on this amp, the Metas should be on another level.

You can wall mount bookshelf speakers if space is an issue!

I guess space constraints will ultimately dictate what you can do, hmm tricky situation for sure!

Edifier 1600Ts bought from here for a stupidly low amount on offer many many many years ago

I've just moved the KEF LSXs onto desk duty this morning, they do work well near-field :) If it doesn't cause a nuisance downstairs I'll probably pair them with an old MK sub I've got.

I wonder if theres any correlation between having a good desk audio setup and not getting much work done...

I'm not seeing a lot of 5.1 setups here. When I played Planetside (the first one) and Battlefield games, having 5.1 positional audio gave you an edge in combat as it really worked in those games. It doesn't seem to be among the sound settings for recent games so is it just not a thing any more?

Most people when playing games like Battlefield will use headphones.
That's true but what if you have the house to yourself and don't have to worry about neighbours? Surely you would have full 5.1 instead of headphones? I have good headphones but I don't want to wear them all the time.

Personally I only use speakers for racing games - can't beat a good sub, etc. for a game with high quality engine sound, etc. modelling - for FPS games especially I prefer headphones for positional audio.

You're right. Racing / sim games work better on speakers. Dirt Rally and TT isle of man, ride on the edge 2 being the most recent I have played that are good.
Also FPS single player games are quite good on speakers

Speaker wise, i'm using iLoud micro monitors on Konig & Meyer microphone stands

Recently picked up a set of the JBL 1Series 104 speakers, the white set is on offer for approx £50 less than the blacks. In the flesh they look a lot like Wall-E which is cool :D

It's my first time running speakers via TRS balanced with Roland balanced cables, sound is incredible for their size, they're connected to a MOTU M4 external audio interface.

I've also bought some Roland RCA cables and was A-B'ing them (you can connect them up at the same time). I never realised how much more detail and clarity/separation you get from the balanced setup, for some artists I listen to like Jarre, Vangelis and the both Daft Punk's Tron CDs for example the difference is great.

However not sure if this is a technical thing or just something JBL have implemented, but the RCAs are 10dB louder than the TRS? It states it in the manual and is very noticeable, but as mentioned the RCA lacks the clarity.

So after a bit of waffling, I can whole heartedly recommend these, they blow my previous (and much loved) Creative T40 MKII speakers out of the water!
