A friend is selling his car for just over 10k and has agreed a price with someone, they will have to travel about 4 hours to get the car and have requested his Registration Number, VIN Number and V5 Documentation Number.

He's aked me for advise and I said it's a lot of information to give someone for possible cloning etc.

However they do advise that people check the VIN number and on some cars it's even placed under the front windscreen for anyone to see.

So is it best that he doesn't pass on these details or is he being over security conceus?

It seems like a bit of a catch 22 situation, don't get scammed buying a car so make sure the VIN is ok and don't get scammed selling a car so don't give out any details.

Couldn't he effectively put the car in his name with that info?

Reg and VIN, not the V5 document number would be my advise.

dont see why they need all that info any way. they can check the reg (hpi) and i can see why they might want the vin but the V5? seams a bit much

i normally ask for a picture of the v5 to confirm its in the address ill be going to, also the vin and reg are required for a full HP check, 10k private sale i would certanly be doing a full hpi

Reg & Vin is fine, when i've been enquiring in the past, people with nothing to hide will pass those over as it allows a HPI check.

Although i would hold back on the V5 number, as its not needed until he is the owner, and then it'll be on his little temporary slip!

I can understand the Reg & Vin number so a full history check can be done, can't see why they need the v5 number so they could whistle for that.

you can use the v5 number to check the MOT online. you can even see advisories online.

You need the V5 registration document serial number and issue date otherwise HPI WILL NOT guarantee the check as valid.
