Here's one for you GD, I was born in South Africa, moved to Holland when I was 15. My family is all Dutch and live in Holland, I'm on a Dutch passport.

Am I Dutch or South African? I know the piece of paper says Dutch, but I was born and raised in South Africa, speak with a saffer accent, etc, so IU consider myself saffer.

Using that as an example, what dictates your nationality?

What's in your heart, I'm only half English by blood, the other is EU (eligible for dual nationality) I grew up in the UK and consider myself British and european and proud of it, my relatives will always see me as english though so I suppose if you want a definite answer I would go with where you were brought up!

Your passport (could be dual national).

Nationality alone is usually only relevant in travel - where you are asked about the nation which you are legally a resident of.

It's not the same as ethnicity (which used to be interchanged with nationality before travel became easy) - which is genetics related.

Your nationality and birth place can be different.

Your culture (behavior) is a fusion of birth place, nationality and ethnicity but can also be artificially modified if you're really clever.
