What DIY Multimeter?

My Maplin Precision Gold M-5010 is about 35 years old. Cost about £30 which was about a months income (pocket money).

I've got a Maplin multimeter which must be of a similar vintage - maybe only 30 years old - not sure which model though.

I've also got one from B&Q which I bought when I'd misplaced the Maplin one (which since reappeared).

I've got a trusty old Fluke 75 that dates back to the early 1980's other than being sent off for routine calibration with the rest of the works kit, it's never missed a beat. It's been dropped, had stuff spilled on it and generally earned it's keep. If I wanted another quality meter I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

That said, time has moved on and if all you want it for is to check batteries and have a general poke around once in a while some of the cheapo auto-ranging meters are more than up to the task. We bought 2-3 cheapo meters just to have lying around for general use (checking for shorts/power rails, etc.) and they were more than up to the task. And some of the lads on production, were shall we say less than sympathetic to tools and kit.

£30-40 will get you something reasonable (I don't think I'd spend less, as you run into manual ranging and pish quality/accuracy)
