Hey guys currently i use a 920 at 4.2 ghz and up building a new system in april. Should i stick with 920 and get a new mobo for that socket or change to sandy bridge ? itll be another year until i upgrade again so these are my choices for the next 12 months. I like to overclock and use the system for games primarily. I already have triple channel ram i dont want to replace so can i use that with sandy bridge boards ?

thanks guys !

You got an awesome rig leave it be. If its just for games you should be playing games at max settings anyway.
If you got money to burn you could upgrade the graphics card and get a nice big monitor. I got the dell u2711 and its brilliant for gaming on, i just love it.
If you can go crossfire maybe get another 5850 anlong with a nice monitor.

Since you mainly play games you don't need to upgrade your system tbh a 920 will be fine for a good while yet. You could if you want to scratch the upgrade itch is to get yourself an ssd and/or another 5850 for some xfire action.

Why not ask this question in April lol

I buy a part every month upto april to spread cost.

Yeha guys i know nothing really needs doing but its my yearly upgrade reguardless so im going to be spending the money, dont have space for a bigger screen as i already have dual screens.

Im already doing more ram, raid ssd's, new case, new graphics card. So its just a case of what to do with the mobo and cpu really as i said in the first post.

Cheers for any help

If your definately going to spend the money then why not go the full way and get the sandy bridge gear coming out. Bit of a waste of money with the rig you already have but your going to spend it anyway.

yeah this was my question, is the new sandy worth getting over keeping the i7 ? as it isnt using dual channel ram and the launch processors arent as good as my current one are they ? dont want to end up doing a downgrade

The sandy bridge launch chips as far as i know don't support tri channel but later versions will. I personally would stick with the i7 till a larger range of SB chips come out and then upgrade to the enthusiast grade. An upgrade, if any, isn't really going to be noticeable if you do get the launch SB and if you have the money saved it's not going to make much difference if you upgrade a month after launch if you find out that SB craps all over all previous silicon (very unlikely though).

How does that make any logical sense? Things get cheaper over time yes? You ever heard of a bank account? Put money into said bank account and wait till you have enough. Far cheaper! You'll get interest too and save on postage and packaging and possibly manage to pick up something you never would have before.

As far as I know, they're replacing the 1366 platform towards the end of this year with the appropriately named 2011 platform. I think if you're going to be spending money on the upgrade then you might as well wait until the next generation replacement is out.

i get free next day from OcUK, why i buy things and how are more my business than a forums, its just the way it needs to be done.

So after the new sandy info out today you guys still recommend sticking with the i7 920 ??
