Hi,

i need some input from people who know what they are talking about with regards to PC builds, my budget is around £400 but i can stretch to a bit more if needed, i mainly need the new PC to work as a VMware ESXi 4 host but will eventually be adding another HD and having a dual boot option with Windows 7 (64bit)

i was thinking of something like this for the build;

  • AMD Phenom II X4 965 black edition 3.4ghz
    ASrock 770 extreme3 socket AM3
    8GB ram 1600mhz (can't quite make my mind up on the model)
    Samsung spinpoint f3 1TB
    OCUK budget case, around £30

does anyone have any suggestions, its been years since i built a PC from scratch, with that above spec im thinking ill only need a SATA-II cable ordering as well.

any other options ?

Thanks for your input

graphics card will be onboard and power supply will come with the case hopefully.

the RAM you suggested would take my build out of my budget i think, i looked at the geIL value ram and can get 8gb for around £60

ah, I recommended the RAM above because I thought you may be using the system for gaming (The Quad Core).
If it's for anything else, value RAM does the job just fine.

for running ESXi i'd try to grab one of those Phenom X6, although not sure if your budget will stretch.

Also consider cheaper (slower) ram, but more of it... For running concurrent VMs you'll need as much as possible!

Again it depends how concurrent VMs you plan to run.
