heres the deal.

I have a x24400,1gbram,ga k8n sli pro,7800gtx and a hiper 580w psu. I want more oomph for new and up and coming games( a la quake wars, crysis e.t.c.)

I underdstand that my hiper might blow up so im not gonna risk and buy a corsair 520w

Do i

A: buy a 8800gtx oc and attempt to overclock my x2 4400

B: Buy a core 2 duo e6420, overclock it to 3ghz +/x6800 speeds (which is supposed to be easily doable), a new motherboard (which one? don't want to spend more than a £100) new ddr2 6400 ram and a cheap 8800gts 640mb of some description. Im thinking then i could get another one for sli when i have the money?

Ok those are the two options, what do i do because im stumped and which would give me better gaming performance.

GFX.

Upcoming brand new CPU's wouldn't be worth buying a new one just at this moment in time for an upgrade.

What socket is your CPU?

939 unfortunately. So you reckon i should just go for the 8800gtx and an overclock. then do the rest later (i have heard about new chips and price cuts due in june/july?). I would wait and do the whole thing in november when new gfx's cards might emerge but to be honest i would like it to enjoy my games throughout the summer before i go back to uni.

July 22nd is the date for massive intel price cuts ( see HERE

Quad cores will near enough halving in price.

There will be a new range of AMD's out soon but most are on socket AM2 which is why I asked. I have one of those CPU's ( the 4200+ X2 ) and it plays pretty much any game out on max/high detail with a BFG 7950GT. 8800 GTX will slaughty any current game, then go for the CPU/mobo upgrade in a few months :)

Cheers dude,i think thats probably what im gonna do. 8800gtx and corsair 520w now and then the others down the road (maybe a quad core :D ).

You don't think im silly by not waiting on the graphics card front do you? Its just ive found a very good price for a bfg oc 8800gtx and i havent seen any hard evidence that there is gonna be a new amazing card till at least october/november time?

I beleive the 8900 and 8950 series are in production over at nVIDIA but they aren't meant to be out until Spring/Summer 2008. Can't see anything promising except for the 2900's which seem to be rather disappointing really.
