Ok here It is what I have at the moment.

Asus P5B motherboard
OCZ 1 gig DDR2
7900GTX
Pentium D 2.8
Hiper 580W PSU
Sonata II Case

Ok my memory is struggling for any game these days so I have ordered 2gig of ram which is comin next week, but should I:

a) Upgrade my CPU now to a quad core and will the FSB's support my motherboard?

b) Do I wait for the penryn cpus that come out in January?

c) Do i just go for a complete overhaul sometime early next year?

d) Upgrade to a cheapish core2duo that supports my motherboard?

What do you want to do with the system

Do you want to play games at better quality, be able to multi-task more, or render things etc etc?
 
I was hoping i could buy things bit by bit if i could, otherwise id have to start saving pretty much budget i dont know about £400 on a upgrade?

Yeah i'd like to play games but im not to fussed about the high resolutions 1024 will do me with its high settings.

Will this run on my motherboard? a lot more FSB.. also how will the Q6600 run on this motherboard these are the 2 cpus im looking at?

Also how important is the L2 Cache, that seems to be swinging the price a lot with these cpu's if its not to important maybe the E4300 will do, sorry for asking so many questions lol im just a tad confused.

I can't remember offhand if the P5B supports 1333mhz CPUs, such as the one you have selected there, I think it doesn't as standard although have a look on the Asus website and see if there is a bios flash.

If you don't have much money at the moment then I'd probably go for an E2180 as many of them will clock to 3ghz+ and they are more efficient than Pentium Ds to begin with. Or for a bit less than £400 this would be a good option, I've included a new motherboard which does support 1333mhz CPUs and DDR3 for when/if you do upgrade again.

Yep i bought that GeLL memory great price, erm do i really need a new power supply though? Ive heard the modular ones die after a year but this one is not a modular one and its been doing fine, coming up to a year now
 
You might get away without, but its a bit of a gamble. It may run fine, or you might get stability issues, particularly in games when the graphics card is drawing lot of power, and finally, one day it may just go pop and theres a good chance it'll take some, or even all your other components with it. A friends PSU blew a few years ago and killed his mobo, CPU, graphics card, 2 hard drives and CD writer. Much more expensive than just replacing it in the first place
