hi,

im trying to find a good usb extension lead male to female about 5m that doesn't cut out etc or slow charge items. i did buy many over time off ebay with bad results with some items working then not and so on. i just want to know if there is anything i can look for when buying so i can get the best ones.

thanks

go for a decent make like Belkin. if you are still having issues with a known make like that then its more likely just an electrical dissipation issues over distance.

cheers, and yeah im mostly having issues with a webcam on a 5m lead which im using as a cctv, its fine on a 1m but after buying some :( cheap 5m off ebay they work sometimes then dont work, and they cut out even if i put other devices on them. so belkin try now :)

its probably just too much being expected of a USB cable/device when extending that far. different web cans will give different results depending on their power draw. if you can find USB 3.0 stuff the power rating is higher so may be better overall. but that does require a new web can etc etc.

another option if possible would be a powered hib nearer the web cam but i'm guessing that the 5m extension is partly due to the lack of power at the required point.

usb3 supplies 900ma (over 5m ther will be quite a drop in power supplied), what the power consumtion of your webcam or does it have its own power supply

Unlike previous standards, the USB 3.0 standard does not directly specify a maximum cable length, requiring only that all cables meet an electrical specification: for copper cabling with AWG 26 wires the maximum practical length is 3 meters (9.8 ft)
