Hi there,

As your monitor doesn't work with lightboost then you may as well just get the cheaper version 1 kit.

As for the performance hit, expect roughly half the framerates compared to running the game in 2D using the same settings. Though if you ease up on AA/AF and some of the advanced settings then you should get most games playing nicely in 3D on a GTX 580.

For 3D movies, what you really need is a paid-for video player that supports Blu-Ray 3D. Something like PowerDVD 10/11/12 Ultra, WinDVD Pro 11 or Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 5, as well as a blu-ray drive if you don't already have one.

thanks for the advice i dont mind turning down a few settings to get it playing smoothly.

would the newer glasses not allow me to see more as it says

"The new gamer-inspired 3D glasses have 20% larger lenses to give you the most viewing area with the least light leakage."

or does this just mean if you have the lightboost?

also will windows media player not play 3D movies then? i think i have a version power dvd that i might have got with my motherboard so i could have a look at that.

and yes i need to get myself a Bluray drive as well

The version 2 glasses will work and the lenses are larger - which could be of some use. However, the main benefit of the v2 kit is lightboost technology, which greatly increases the light output of the monitor when playing stuff in 3D - since the nature of active shutter glasses makes things darker when in use. However, this technology only works in a few monitors (like the new XL2420T) and can't be made use of with your monitor. Therefore, if you go for the version 2 kit you will be paying £45 for 20% larger glasses.

No, windows media player won't play 3D movies - as the vast majority of 3D movies are presented on 3D Blu-ray which needs to be decoded by paid-for software.

Unfortunaely, if you got a version of PowerDVD or WinDVD with your hardware it may play standard blu-rays, but is unlikely to be the special premium version which runs 3D Blu-rays. That said, this kind of included software (including the stuff that comes with retail blu-ray drives) often gives you the option to upgrade to the full version (with 3D Blu-ray support) for a reduced fee.

Thanks I think I will get a blu ray drive next month so i will keep in mind to buy a retail version and i can then see if i need to buy a premium version.

Ok so would you recomed the v2 glasses as they are bigger as i wear glasses allready although I am going to specsavers in 2 weeks to have contact lenses so this might not be an issue if i get on with contact lenses

also the important question is it worth getting lol ive never tried it before and only quickly seen 3D in the shops.

Here is a comparison of the V2 glasses to the original ones. If you only plan to do occasional 3D gaming, then I personally wouldn't pay the extra for the slightly larger glasses, but if you want the best 3D experience and plan to play in 3D a lot then they may be a better bet.

As for whether it is worth going for - it is very much down to the individual. If you like the 3D effect in the cinema and on display TVs in shops (specifically ones playing console games in 3D on TVs which use active shutter glasses) then you will probably like them, and since you already have the 120Hz monitor and Nvidia graphics card then testing out 3D gaming isn't going to cost you too much (plus you can always sell on the 3D kit if you don't like it).

I'd Recommend Power DVD, If you have an iPhone it has its own App remote control which is actually surprisingly good =)

That's powerdvd 12 ultimate or premium (the expensive one, wont be supplied with a drive i doubt). It's does as you say have apps on the iphone and android marketplace to use the phone as a remote for the pc.

I run a phenom 555BE (unlocked) and a gtx 460 (900mhz OC) on my 42inch 3D tv as a HTPC. The Nvidia drivers work flawlessly with it and i use the active glasses supplied with the tv.

Ok it's not high end gear but i can run BF3 and crysis 2 etc in 3D with customised settings. It still looks far superior to my xbox 360s attempts and my version of powerdvd can convert 2D movies to 3D and actually does a pretty good job of it too (better than my tv's solution). Might be worth checking the features of the different editions before you buy.

Hope we have been of help, any more questions or problems come back to us :)

yes thats why i got a 120hrz monitor so i had the option of doing 3D gaming i think I might go with v2 as I can put a bit of birthday money towards it so it wont take too much a hit on my bank balance :D

ive only briefly seen 3D in the shops and what i saw was impressive.

Thanks for all your help guys as always your all very helpful.
