I'm getting a 5870 soon which will have a hdmi out. Would it be possible to have the 5870 hooked upto my pc via dvi (1680x1050) and run a hdmi cable to my hd tv for itunes movie playback at the same time?

I am completely new to anything to do with multi display setups so please excuse my ridiculous lack of knowledge lol

Cheers :)

Do you want the movie to be played just on the TV (so you can do something else on the monitor) - or are you wanting the movie to be played on both at the same time?

Also, is it possible you can use a media player other than itunes, or is the content restricted to itunes?

Either will do fine. I can just mute the sound, etc on the pc if i need to and just have it running on the second output. However i know Apple are extremely restrictive about everything so i'm not sure how/if it will work.

Yes mate its simple :) not long ago I was wondering the same as you, when you hook up your new gfx just run the cable into the hdtv, go into your display properties for your graphics card(s) and set up multiple displays and select your source on the TV to the HDMI and you should be good to go, it will just be like have one wide display so you will simply just need to drag your itunes movie player over to the next screen :)

As Se7ven says, the hooking up the TV as a seond monitor will be very easy. Just look for "extended mode" in the catalyst control centre and you should be away (though you may need to mess around with the scaling options a bit to ensure the picture properly fills the screen).

I just tried it out in itunes with my second screen (16:9 TV), it worked fine - but with some caveats.

You need to drag the itunes window (or the detached movie window) over to the TV monitor. Then you click on full screen and it will fill the TV screen with the video. However, itunes always blacks out the primary monitor when you do this - so you won't be able to do other stuff while the itunes movie is playing.
You can select the option "fit to screen" and it will play the video in a windowed mode on the TV and allow you to still work on the main monitor - but it is not proper full screen.

Just found out my old 17" monitor and tried what you said using a spare dvi port and yup as you say, its just a case of dragging the itunes window over and clicking full screen. Works perfectly :) Just need to get everything sorted now for when i get the 5870.

Cheers for the input everyone :D
