Im interested in going wireless, currently have a linksys router which is fantastic, so i would like to stick with the company, this question may sound silly but what do i need for a wireless setup? mainly surf the web play i do a lot of gaming so something reliable, any help for this old noob would be great.

Cheers Dave

Why do you want to go wireless if wired currently? Ideally you want to keep cabled in for gaming.

Anyway, you can add an Access Point to your router (just plugs into a spare ethernet port like a PC would) and if adding your computer you'll need either a PCI or USB wireless card or if using a laptop, it will be built in already.

Alternatively you can replace the router you have with a wireless model, which does the same job but allows both wired and wireless connections.

Either way make sure your wireless is secured (ideally with WPA2 but WPA is ok), to stop your neighbours and others using your Internet connection.

Hope that helps.

Well I'm no expert, but I'm sure someone will correct me if any of this is wrong.

Firstly, are you on Cable (Virgin) or ADSL (BT etc), as this will determine what type of router you'll need.

Presuming you have ADSL, you'll need;

Starting from the wall socket..

ADSL Microfilter - something like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-001-DN&groupid=46&catid=1595&subcat=

Wireless Router wired to the modem socket of the filter.

And then wireless cards in each PC / laptop, internal;

or external usb;

People here may be able to recommend a router suited to your needs.

Hi guys and thanks for the replies, im looking at a mixture of wired and wireless keeping my main rig wired to the router then have the wireless connection for an iphone, laptop and ipod touch, im all microfiltered so thats not a problem and im using the master socket in the house, sorry if i not making much sense.

EDIT : im on ADSL (ADSL24)

Nearly all, if not every wireless router will have an ethernet port so you can wire up your PC directly to the router.

Obviously it's an advantage if your PC is near where the router will be located, save you sending wires all over the house.

Does it matter if the wireless router is upstairs(main rig is) , say if i was using the iphone, ipod touch and laptop downstairs, would there be a problem in signal?

Depends how thick the walls/floors are, distance from your room etc.

I think each router will probably have it's own specification and optimal operating distance.

And I'm sure if it's been out for a while there'll be plenty of reviews that test this kind of thing.
