is it worth buying new gen cards with dx10 and vista in january
Well you wont have any new dx10 games to play , but you will have the fastest dx9 games and card around ..... i would wait till both ati and nvidia have there cards out , as if nvidia is first then you can be sure you will pay at least £400 for it , it is up to you , i need a pcie card as i am building a new comp , and my 6800gt is apg , so i think i will get a 7600gt or something just to tide me over till dx10 is realeased

so you think i may need to save some more money to afford a decent next gen card and a 24" tft

wait till dx10 , as would suspect one dx10 card will run games at your res no problem........ also give you some time to save up more..... ;)

i hate waiting lol. but if the performance increase will be that much better then i suppose its worth it.

how much is vista gonna cost and would i need to upgrade anything else to run vista, dx10 etc etc

not gonna jump on the dx10 bandwagon until the second round of cards appear with reduced power consumption and increased efficiency.

well i have about 400 spare till january (graphics) and then i'm getting another lump of money.. about 700 or something (new tft)

For £400 get a Superclocked EVGA 7950GX2 and use the step up option if something better comes out in the next 90 days. Best to wait tbh.

Yep but dont do it yet - wait until January.

I would just enjoy your 24incher for a while then jump in a few months later with a next gen card.

On a personal note I would not adopt windows vista in Jan I would wait 6mths or so at least for all the driver issues to have been sorted etc.

Looking at the first gen G80 cards I was shocked to see 2 yes 2 pcie power connectors!!! The new dx10 cards look like real hungry hippos!!! (high power consumption!).

So I would purchase the monitor anyway and wait till mid 2007 for the 2nd gen dx10 cards (like OP said) and for Vista to have become more consolidated (bug free!).

Bear in mind also that the price of LCDs is always dropping so consider the following.....

(1) Do I need it .... Will I use it??? (dx10 games will be few in 2007)

(2) Can I afford it?? don't bust yourself ..... if you need something else more or owe some money then fulfil that first

(3) Get it for the cheapest price .... though do bear in mind customer service.... Overclockers have been ok with me along with a few other suppliers. 1 or 2 have been petty and awkward so saving that few quid may not be the best strategy ... especially on a self build.

PS .... I am running 1900x1200 on my Dell 2405 panel and it is ok for games and standard windows apps. Not too good infact really bad is the dvd playback and any PAL50 source signal playback. Whatever new monitor (24inch+) u buy make sure u check the ability with UK dvd and TV signal playback if that is important to you. Also another consideration is something called "input lag" which is of importance I think to "professional/hardcore gamers" only.

Buy monitor first ...... then gfx cards ....

From reading around when I was buying my gfx cards a few months back "VIDEO MEMORY" was a considerable factor in improving performance at the higher resolutions.

Thats why I went for the 512MB cards .... Though I think that the new G80 cards are going to be 768MB??? so personally I would not consider anything less than 512MB for gaming at those high resolutions.

So as I said personally I would purchase the monitor first then a decent (highish Memory) card.

i cant afford the monitor till january, and my current card x300 wont cope with my 17"ers at the moment even in windows. so i need a half decent graphics card to keep me going until dx10 gen2.

so i need a card that can handle that res, to keep me going for another 8-10month.

I have been looking at 24" screen, the problem I see that you need crossfire or SLI setup to run games smooth at 1920x1200 with all the extras turned on.

I have been informed that you can run with one high end card some games ok, may have to turn off a few settings or drop down screen resolution. Ok in 2D set up no problem

So you may been better to buy a cheap card to go with your monitor set now and wait for Jan for new dx10 cards?

The ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256MB GDDR3 card is on special offer this week, for £164 or OcUK GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 for £188 which is also on special offer as well
