What do i need to upgrade to play in 3D?

I've recently bought the Acer H5360 3D NVidia compatible projector.
It only runs at 1280x720 so shouldn't need to much power to run games in 3D

My current spec is-
C2D E4300
4gb Ram
ATi HD4850
Corsair HX520.

So what Nvidia graphics card would i need to play games at decent detail?

Or what can I do on the Ati side of things to get to play games in 3D?

I have just ordered a GTX 470 for 3D, all though i will be using a monitor rather than a projector.

The nVidia site gives a list of compatible cards here.

But from what i understand, to get a decent frame rate with high detail on most games you want at least a 470, I'm sure others will correct me if i'm wrong.

As for ATI, i'm not too familiar with their system so can't help you there.

What games do you want to play? What budget do you have?

4850 will do med/high on that resolution with most games..

Even at 720P.
And isn't texture quality and detail not as important in 3d gaming as its more of a blurred image. So you can drop the detail a bit?

I play all types of games, but most likely on this 3d projector its going to be FPS's and action games (res probably too low for RTS games). And I don't want to spend too much because I also have to buy the glasses. So about a #130 for the graphics card, max.

Well thats 5770 money which isn't a great deal better than a 4850..

Maybe a 5830 for £160?

On another note have you overclocked your E4300 because it will probably bottleneck at 1.8Ghz

Also isnt it true that when running games in 3d vision the gfx card is rendering 2x the amount of stuff as it does in non 3d because it rendering each frame twice once for each eye ?

3D and ATI can be done. You need aftermarket 3D drivers (TriDef (DDD) or iZ3D, DDD seems to be better).

As you've already got everything else, I'd simply download the trial version of each and see how it goes. Only thing is, you'd need the glasses. You need stereoscopic shutter glasses, and the NVidia ones obviously won't work with the ATI.

Other option would be to upgrade to a second hand nVidia GTX200 series card (at least a GTX260) - should be fairly cheap, and still pretty good.

Yes, hence the need for more powerful GPUs.

I get approximately half frames when playing in 3D, sometimes a little better.

CPU is running at 2.7GHz which is its overclocking stable limit.

How much are stereoscopic shutter glasses if I do stick with ATi?
And will those have any chance of working with PS3 for games or 3D blurays? I know the Nvidia ones don't.

I'm using a 4870 with the iz3d drivers and it works fine at 1920x1080 3d on my Samsung TV. I have to turn down some of the effects in a couple of games but on the whole it works pretty well. If your projector accepts checkerboard input from the graphics card then the iz3d driver is free for ATI users. Would probably be worth giving it a go and seeing how you get on before upgrading.
