What do I need?

Well, I am looking to add some more features to my current rig to turn it into a better entertainment system for gaming, music and movies. Only I am unsure what I need to better what I have.

Current spec is:

Core 2 duo 6400
2gb ram
180gb hdd
x-fi xtreme music
ati radeon x1950xt
lg194wt

I have no plans to add a new blu-ray drive as I have a PS3 for that, and a xbox 360 drive for HD-DVD. But could maybe do with a amp or something for surround.

Gaming wise, I like my radeon, but unsure whether dx10 is worth jumping to just yet.

Screenwise, I thought of something bigger or simply better than what I have.

£700 is my budget.

because I WANT MORE, I am greedy or obviously in need of some shiney stuff to go in or connected to my pc.

8800 GTX, a quad core and a 22" screen would come to about £700.

I did think that, but there's no apps for quad core yet (though same goes for dual core I suppose) but the GTX does seem nice - don't I need vista which is no go area if you don't have right drivers?

Clearly you need to get a Dell 2407WFP-HC and a 512mb 2900xt to drive it. You'll use up most of that budget but methinks the transition from your current 19" to 24" will be quite a revelation.

Oops, sorry I was refering to the GTX dx10 in vista because XP doesn't use dx10.

Ah, I see. I enjoy complicating things

If you want to game DX10, then you'll need Vista yes. Or you can wait for the releases from Falling Leaf Systems, but I doubt you're such a hardcore fan of XP.

biggest thing I need of all atm, which I have just discovered (which is actually quite funny) is that I need a new CPU fan. The standard intel one I am using is giving me a reported 56c according to my bios.

How good is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro?

It's certainly an improvement, and if no overclocking is done it will keep you nice and cool.
